20 years in motion.
Caljan Liepāja.

 Our solutions   create motion.

Motion that helps the world's largest logistics companies work faster, safer and more efficiently. Motion you can see at an Amazon warehouse in Frankfurt, a FedEx terminal in Chicago and Austrian Post's sorting centre in Vienna. And motion that ends exactly where you want it most – at your front door.

Twenty years ago, that motion started here – in Liepāja. With six determined people. One welded part. And the belief that there's always a better way.

Over those twenty years, that belief has grown into a team of 326 people at what is today the Group’s largest manufacturing and engineering centre. This motion is also Liepāja's story – of skills that grow, jobs that matter, and a city that surprises.

The best part? The motion continues.

20 years of Caljan Liepāja: 2006-2026

Over the past 20 years, Caljan Liepaja has grown from a small welding team into the Caljan Group's largest manufacturing and engineering centre. Here is a look back at the milestones that shaped that journey.

 1963-2006

The origins of the Caljan Group trace back to Denmark in the 1960s. It began with overhead conveyor production, followed soon after by the first Telescopic Conveyor – Long John – a solution that transformed trailer loading and unloading.

Over the following decades, Caljan continued to build on this idea. New generations of Telescopic Conveyors were introduced, and by the 1980s, the company name had become synonymous with quality, safety and reliability. Telescopic Conveyors were simply called “Caljan”.

In search of a new location to expand manufacturing, the company’s leadership team came to Liepāja. The decision was initially pragmatic – to produce more efficiently and at lower cost. It soon became clear, however, that Liepāja offered much more: a motivated and skilled team ready to grow with the company.

Work began in the former meat processing plant, where a small team welded components that were then shipped to Denmark.

 2007-2008

employees: 42

Within just two years, production in Liepāja evolved. The team moved from welding individual parts to building complete equipment. The first RollerLoader Telescopic Conveyor units reached customers across global markets.

 2009

employees: 27

The first engineer joined the team, making an important step forward. From that point on, equipment was not only manufactured in Liepāja but also designed there. Soon after, the first belt Telescopic Conveyor was delivered to a customer in Brazil.

 2010

employees: 28

The CB2 (Classic Belt Track Performer) product line was transferred to Latvia, and Liepāja produced the first units of this model.

 2011-2013

employees: ~46

As the team expanded and demand increased, a technical department was established, focusing on standard Telescopic Conveyor design. Year by year, Liepāja took on an increasing share of the Caljan Group's production process – from material preparation and welding to painting and assembly.

 2014-2015

employees: ~75

Liepāja was entrusted with full responsibility for the Classic Telescopic Conveyor production. What began as a small manufacturing site had become one of the Group’s key production and engineering centres.

 2016

employees: 84

Production volumes continued to grow. Over the course of the year, 431 telescopic conveyors were delivered to customers – nearly ten units per week.

 2017

employees: 126

The team completed its first major order of Performer Telescopic Conveyors for the United States – at the time, the most advanced Caljan solution for efficient cargo handling.

The same year, a welding competence centre was established. From this point forward, welding standards and expertise across the entire Caljan Group were defined and led by specialists in Liepāja.

 2018-2019

employees: 153

Liepāja assumed full technical responsibility for the Classic and RollerLoader Telescopic Conveyor models. At the same time, an R&D team was established to drive innovation and develop new solutions. This enabled the production of 1,236 units in a single year – three times more than two years earlier.

It became clear that the existing premises could no longer support this pace. Caljan acquired a new facility in the former “Liepājas metalurgs” area on Brīvības Street. From that point, the facility layout and production flow were carefully designed around Caljan’s products and workflows.

 2020

employees: 179

The Liepāja facility was visited by a Swedish investor group from Investment AB Latour. What they saw – a committed team, strong innovation and clear growth potential – helped confirm the decision to acquire the entire Caljan Group. Liepāja had become a decisive factor.

That same year, the team moved into new production facilities on Brīvības Street, where it continues to operate today.

 2021

employees: 220

The pandemic reshaped the industry: e-commerce surged, while labour shortages intensified. Automation became essential. During the year, 1,706 Telescopic Conveyors and loading equipment were delivered to clients – more than ever before.

 2022

employees: 268

Caljan acquired the Austrian company PHS Logistiktechnik GmbH, developer of the automated small parcel unloading solution AutoUnloader. This complemented Caljan’s AutoLoader, enabling fully automated loading and unloading. The entire product line – development, manufacturing and testing – was transferred to Liepāja.

At the same time, sales support and aftermarket functions were established, and a separate facility on Brīvības Street was acquired for these functions.

 2023

employees: 248

Development of automation solutions continued, including engineering work on an AutoUnloader solution for trailer unloading. Projects of this scale require strong engineering capabilities, leading to a long-term partnership with Riga Technical University, which continues to this day.

 2024

employees: 238

The AutoUnloader solution for trailers was introduced to customers across Europe and the United States. Work also began on an automated profile storage system.

Alongside manufacturing, Liepāja became a centre for marketing, IT, digitalisation and sustainability functions within the Group.

 2025

employees: 306

The Caljan Technology Centre opened in Liepāja a space where customers can experience automation in real-life conditions.

As demand grew, production capacity was doubled, and more than 60 new colleagues joined the team. This progress was also recognised externally: LSEZ (Liepāja Special Economic Zone) awarded a prize for contribution to sustainable workforce development and practice-based education, while the people of Liepāja named Caljan the “Most Progressive Technology Company in Liepāja”.

 2026

employees: 326

This year, Caljan Liepāja was entrusted with full responsibility for innovation across the Group – a natural next step for a team that has earned it. In addition, Managing Director Gatis Dradeika was named “Citizen of the Year in Liepāja” for his contribution to the city’s economic development – recognition that belongs to the entire Caljan team.

Twenty years have shown that growth is not a coincidence – it is a choice made every day. And we continue this journey – driving innovation and shaping the future of logistics.

 Innovations
 made in Liepāja

Innovation at Caljan does not start with an idea. It starts with real challenges.
An operator inside a trailer managing parcel flow.
A client looking for better ways to handle increasing cargo volumes.

This is where our solutions come from – many of them designed and manufactured in Liepāja. And quite possibly, a parcel you’ve ordered online has already moved on telescopic conveyors made right here.

Detachable Platform

A solution developed for the specific demands of the UK logistics market.

In the UK, it’s not just the traffic that runs differently – the logistics setup does too. Double-deck trailers allow operators to move up to 60% more cargo. Loading and unloading, however, is another story – one that often comes with strain and heavy manual handling.

That changed when the Caljan Liepāja team developed an addition to the Performer Telescopic Conveyor – the Detachable Platform. It lifts parcels to the upper trailer level, enabling efficient loading and unloading across both decks without manual lifting. One conveyor. Two modes. Zero compromise.

ErgoRider

An integrated platform and conveyor belt in one solution.

When handling loose-loaded cargo, there is often a choice to make – speed or safety. In a dark trailer, while searching for the next parcel, the operator either loses time or risks awkward movements and strain. The Caljan team solved this dilemma.

The ErgoRider, designed and manufactured in Liepāja, is a platform that works together with the Caljan Performer Telescopic Conveyor to adjust to load height and depth, illuminate the trailer with LED lights, and position the operator right at the cargo. The result: twice as fast cargo handling and lower risk of injury.

ErgoRider for two operators

An innovation that doubles handling capacity.

A long-term partnership with a customer created a new challenge: how do you increase efficiency while maintaining a safe working environment? Caljan’s answer – an adapted ErgoRider platform that allows two operators to work in tandem.

The practical benefits for the customer? A wider basket with rear doors for easier access, a wider snoot for more precise handling of larger items, and adjustable height for both operators working directly at the cargo.

AutoLoader and AutoUnloader

Automation that removes strain and increases capacity.

At high parcel volumes, truck loading and unloading become the most critical part of the process. The work is physically demanding and time-consuming, while performance often depends on the number of operators. The solution? Automation.

AutoLoader smoothly feeds and distributes cargo into trailers at up to 3,500 parcels per hour. Meanwhile, AutoUnloader takes over the heaviest work, unloading a full trailer in just 15–30 minutes while achieving capacity up to 5,000 parcels per hour. The best part? Both solutions ensuring a continuous flow of goods

Robotics Collaboration

Automation that keeps goods moving.

One of the latest areas of innovation at Caljan Liepaja is Robotics Collaboration. Just like people, robots need an environment where they can work efficiently and continuously – and Caljan Telescopic Conveyors are designed exactly for that. They connect people, conveyors, and robots into one system.

This allows clients to flexibly adjust their level of automation and switch between manual and robotic operation, so parcels keep moving and arrive on time.

The celebration, drawn by children

When Caljan Liepaja marked 20, our employees' children picked up their crayons and joined the celebration. No technical drawings, no production lines, just colour, imagination, and a very personal "happy anniversary" to the place where mum or dad goes to work every day.

Caljan is an international company that develops innovative solutions for handling loose-loaded cargo. We are one of the leading manufacturers of telescopic conveyors, and our main production and engineering hub is in Liepāja, Latvia.

At our Liepāja facility, we design, manufacture, assemble and test telescopic conveyors. These systems help businesses handle tens of thousands of parcels per hour – more efficiently, safely, and with a lot less heavy lifting.

More than 30 thousand – and counting. Right now, they're running in logistics hubs across the globe, moving parcels around the clock.

Because Caljan Liepāja is the only place in Latvia where you can build world-class telescopic conveyors – and your career – at the same time.

People value the open and down-to-earth environment, the focus on quality, safety and development, and the opportunity to gain international experience. And yes – a tidy workplace and a warm lunch is appreciated too.

Quite a significant one. Caljan brings skilled jobs, international experience and real manufacturing capability to the city – all of which drives regional economic growth and puts Liepaja on the global logistics map.
